View Full Version : Yoo ChangHyuk - A Korean Shuko?

Upon reading the latest Goama, I couldn't help but draw a comparison:

Interview with Yoo ChangHyuk:

- Did you prepare well for this tournament?
- Recently I am not studying Go at all, I am meeting my friends and drinking soju (A.D: Korean vodka), if I have a free time. I just skipped few meetings, because of this tournament :)

Describing Fujisawa Shuko:

Yet he has won most of the major titles, making a speciality of winning the first term of each new event. His legendary "celebrations" after each possibly contributed to the cancer that he has twice defeated, but in typical fashion he considered that his drinking saved his life: if he hadn't gone to be treated for that, the tumour would not have been discovered in time. It's a point of view!

While Yoo's comment may have been in jest, one can't help but think there's at least a slight gem of truth there. I've heard many stories of Shuko's exploits, but Yoo ChangHyuk I am fairly ignorant of (at least away from the goban). Anyone know of anything?

I read that in the last few years Yoo opened a go school and has been more focused on that than on tournaments. However, he is doing well in this years Samsung cup so far, getting through the first two rounds and beating Kong Jie in the process.

He reminds me a little of Yoda Norimoto, because both tend to wear traditional old outfits during tournaments as opposed to modern suits.

See http://www.gogameworld.com/gophp/playerinfo.php?id=13 for more info.

He wrote a couple books which were translated to chinese.
See my post here (http://www.godiscussions.com/forum/showpost.php?p=40153&postcount=99) for the books he wrote.

He's interesting, and reputed to be largely self-taught. One piece of personal history I don't know much about was hinted at by this tantalizing entry in gobase.org:

03-01-2004

The wife of Korean professional Yoo ChangHyuk (38 yrs), Kim TaeHee (33 yrs, TV anchor) was found dead in her home yesterday. No further details are available yet.

What are the further details? It would seem very hard to continue playing at the top level after such a tragedy.
