Default Marlon Brando

Turner Classic Movies is about to show an old postwar Japan movie called "The Teahouse of the August Moon". While researching the movie, I came across this picture:

I don't know if this has been mentioned in this thread already.
In the book 'House of Leaves' by Mark Danielewski, Go gets at least one sentence (I'm not done reading it yet)..
"Sometimes Tom and Navidson play Go".

It's either exactly that sentence or something close to it.

When you've finished reading, be sure to post about the book on http://senseis.xmp.net/?Literature

Tengen, is that picture a scene from the movie, or just a casual shot taken between shoots? I'm curious to know if Marlon Brando played Go.

I started to watch the movie just after finishing my post, then realized to my horror that Brando was playing a Japanese guy in the movie, complete with stereotypical accent. Both my gf and I recoiled at this and stopped watching. So I can't say if it's a shot from the movie or not, but I suspect it was a casual shot between takes.

I'm something of a Brando fan and am betting that he was still tied into the studio system in the mid 50s (when this movie was shot) and probably couldn't say no to the role. Still, watching non-Asians play Asians more than a little uncomfortable.

The only positive thing I can say about it is that Brando's portrayal wasn't nearly as bad as the Breakfast at Tiffany's fiasco.

The title is 圍棋少年, wei(2) qi(2) shao(3) nian(2); literally, "The Go Youngster" or "The Go Juvenile", or perhaps colloquially, "The Go Boy". Seems to be a copycat of Hikaru no Go.

Gah! Not again! It's a cartoon about Go; that's where the similarity with Hikaru no Go ends!

I wrote a bit about this ages ago: http://www.godiscussions.com/forum/s...5&postcount=49

If you search this forum for "weiqi shaonian" or "围棋少年" you'll find a few threads where it's been discussed.

Shao Weigang 9p got married a few days ago, all the top Chinese pros were there as well (looks like Gu Li got glasses now; I spot Kong Jie 9p, Yu Bin 9p, Hu Yaoyu 8p, Chang Hao 9p). You can find all the pics here:
