呉清源打碁全集, Go Seigen

This is Go Seigen’s kifu collection. This was available from Kiseido for a time, but is now out of print and moderately hard to find. The collection is boxed with four volumes. The volumes are cloth bound, and each has a woven bookmark.

Each game record takes a minimum of space, though a few take up more than one page. The game records are sequential, and all text is in Japanese. Comments exist for each game, but they’re limited (probably a description of the game’s circumstances or minor overview).

There are an additional 27 Appendix kifu at the end of Vol. 4. I’m not sure what the significance of these is.

I haven’t had the books long enough to comment on the content (although it seems quite obvious).

Go Seigen’s games can be harder to understand than most, but he has a way of travelling around the board that astounds me. He’s by far my favorite player (although not active) because of his style and reading ability. I’m convinced that this collection will be very important for my growth as I get stronger.

It’s true that this entire collection is available on the internet in SGF format. The quality of the bindings, and the fact that the kifu are available to me directly without having to print them out and worry about binding them in some way. The cost and relative rarity makes the collection unrealistic for most, but the value of it is priceless for a SDK to high Dan level student and to a collector.
