This is the most useful tactics book I’ve read since “Life and Death” and “Tesuji.” I haven’t even finished it, and I feel like I’ve jumped a stone or two in strength. Tsumego are easier, and 3-dans have been resigning their games with me (at 5 stones, which is 3 less than my rating would prescribe). At my age, it’s nice to find something that brings tangible improvement. I’m so looking forward to the Go Congress… Everybody knows that, in a semeai, the group with more liberties wins, one eye beats no eye, and you should fill the inside liberties last. But there’s surprisingly more to capturing races than that, as I’ve often learned to my chagrin… Some fights are qualitatively different from others. Hunter’s methodical organization and step-by-step presentation is what makes this book worthwhile.
