Strategic Concepts of Go, Yoshiaki NagaharaThe essence of Go strategy and in fact the essence of Go itslef lies in the eight concepts presented in Part I of this book. An understanding of these concepts and their interrelationship is prerequisite to appreciating the beauty of Go. However, most kyu players are not aware of these concepts and many dan players have only a vague idea of their meaning. Furthermore, no one can advance to the higher dan levels with a clear and working understanding of these concepts. It is the purpose of this book to give the reader that understanding. Comments & ReviewsImportant but difficult - Written by gowan
![]() This is one of the first books in English to discuss the fundamental strategic concepts of miai, aji, kikashi, thickness, korigatachi, sabaki, furikawari, and yosumiru. As you can see the book is full of Japanese go vocabulary. I think this is an advanced book. It does not give elementary explanations of the concepts accessible to players weaker than say 5k, and many dan players do not understand some of these things very well. In fact, even pros disagree on kikashi. This book has been around for more than 30 years, though out of print now, and the extent to which players misuse these terms in everyday discussion (mistaking korigatachi for thickness for example) shows how difficult the concepts are. Something for us all to improve by studying.
