In handicap games, where the handicap stones on the star points are not efficient in securing territory, it is strategically sounder for Black to emphasize influence instead. However, weaker players lack the ability and the confidence to play an influence-oriented game; instead of taking chances, they prefer to go for territory and security.

The aim of this book is to teach the reader how to play for influence and how to turn this influence into secure territory. Strategic principles are emphasized and example games show how these principles are put to use. The last chapter presents thirty-seven problems taken from actual games, giving the reader a chance to apply the principles he has learned.

This out-of-print volume of the Elementary Go Series summarizes and illustrates general principles for Black and White to apply in handicap games. It is most ideally suited for beginning and intermediate players.

A fair price for this book in the used market would be about $25 and certainly no more than $30 (if you’re collecting).
