Dictionary of Basic Fuseki, Vol.1, Rin Kaiho

The purpose of this book is to help a Go player accomplish the above objectives by studying and learning the historical development of basic Star Point Fuseki that equally divides a grid.

Each person has a unique style. If there is one player who likes to begin with the 3-4 point, one can find others who like to begin with the star point. If one player likes to extend down the side from this stone, another might disagree, saying that no, here a one point jump is the only play. Just as facial features vary from person to person, there is an infinite variety of ways of thinking. In distinction to plays that are made in the middle game or in life and death situations, there are many ways of playing in the opening, and each in its own way is correct. To uniformly amalgamate and consolidate these elements is close to impossible.

In this book, the principal opening maneuvers are classified, and games considered representative types have been selected and analyzed for the reader’s perusal. If the reader can grasp the players’ initial conceptions and struggles to find the best plays on the board, as well as the experience and efforts to that end that have been accumulated, the value of this opening dictionary is greatly enhanced, and nothing could be more gratifying to the author.

I just bought the two books in this series, and, not having seen them first, am very disappointed. While we’re used to board diagrams in black and white, this book has gray backgrounds for the boards, making it much harder to follow the diagrams and see things at a glance. This is a huge mistake, and could be a problem to using these books.

This is a translation of a Japanese book published by the Nihon Ki-in. The original was published in 1985, prior to the "Korean Revolution". It covers basic opening patterns for the first four or five moves. It shows typical developments from the basic patterns and discusses whole board strategies.  German 5d Robert Jasiek’s review of this book is here: http://www.gobooks.info/jasiek/.
