a readable introduction - Written by Tommie

Tommie’s review (I have not ‘read’ the book, I just browsed though it): This book is the 1st volume of an ‘Introductory Teaching’ by it’s own words. It remains unknown to the Western reader whether there exist future volumes in Chinese and whether translation of those is planned. While I am dissappointed by the lay-out & graphic of the cover (well, is it important after you have bought the book?), the title (is ‘WeiQi in Culture’ a good translation of ‘Wenhua de WeiQi’ ? Is it even grammatically correct if translated word by word? culture // possesive // Go -> Go of Culture? This makes no sense in English (to me), hence I understand the problems of the translator, if he has to use the specific words. I’ve once read the comment of a translator English-German who had to translate sentences as ‘economics is not about economy’. )) As far as I could discover by browsing fast through the book, it does not teach about WeiQi in Culture, nor about Culture in WeiQi or about culture anyway (except that Go is part of culture). Hence, my problems with the title. the subtitle (why has’ Wu SongSheng 9 dan’, the Grocers’ apostrophe (an incorrect possessive apostrophe)?) I find it a good beginner’s book. The introduction praises the great achievements of the author, espec. in teaching in China, Australia & Korea. The foreword is by RuFen Song, a former member of the People’s Congres of the PRC. In it he declares literally that he became ‘34 years ago (...) a member of a mafia group’ . Originally published in China 2001, this is about (2001-34) the year 1966 (the start of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution). However my increased interest (in his possible RedGuard experiences?) is not stilled as I do not learn more about Mr. Song. The lessons (see content below) are introduced by a bit of general, not uninteresting text, then follow the necessary diagrams with the more technical explanations. Some important questions, which every player can ask himself during many stages of the game are given to the reader ’... most important point?, Where is the highest potential for development ? etc. ’ are given to the learning reader.

It is a very readable, worthwhile, buyable introduction. By those added texts at the beginning of each ‘lesson’ (chapter), it is more enjoyable to me than some other introductions I have seen (which only comprised the technical stuff).
