YMI GoBox,

A finely crafted Go board is built to last forever, but one smashed corner or scratched surface and its life is shortened in a hurry. So we’ve created The GoBox, a sturdy ABS hard plastic case with generous amounts of foam padding and wheels. ABS plastic is favored for travel gear because it is water repellant, scratch resistant, and its high impact strength. It’s the same type of case used by musicians to carry instruments and by technicians to carry expensive equipment.

The main compartment will fit an 18-1/4’’ x 17-1/4’’ (Japanese standard size) Go Board up to 2-3/8’’ (6cm) thick. We’ve included a couple of extra sheets of foam in case your Go board is thinner, or if you want to carry several thin Go boards packed together. The two circular compartments are 6-1/4’’ wide and 4-1/4’’ high to accommodate standard size Go stone bowls, including Go Seigen and Kitani bowls. There’s also an added small compartment for sundry items, a retractable handle and wheels, and two travel locks and set of keys.

Case measures 31-1/4’‘L x 23’‘W x 7-1/4’‘H (80cm x 60cm x 18cm).

My 6cm board fits very snugly, and the bowls were secured very well, though I had initial reservations as they’re not quite as wide as the space for them. But the foam on top keeps them put. I was also able to cram an Excalibur II clock in the other compartment. Overall, pretty good value and it seems the best way to lug around a non-folding/slotted board

The GoBox is a little too large for carry-on luggage and despite appearances it is not sturdy enough to use as checked baggage. However, it does keep your Go equipment secure under normal circumstances. If the case was locked, the GoBox could easily survive falling down a flight of stairs without damaging the equipment inside. It is useful when transporting your equipment to a local event and it makes a good storage case to keep your equipment out of the way and dust free when not in use.
