Comments & ReviewsBeautiful Economical Bowls - Written by porksheng on 2008-03-30 20:21:57
![]() The grains of these bowls may not be as fine & uniformed as those of the keyaki bowls especially for a 'grain peeper' like me. But if you look at it from a further distance of more than 1 meter away, the bowls are pretty much similar to other higher quality bowls. Shape****-perfect 'curves' Size****-fits my size 32 shell & slate stones from KGT, fills up to about 80% of the bowls Grain***-very rough grains lines Colour****-dark brownish orange Finishing****-glossy and smooth Overall****-very good if you are not a 'grain peeper'; if you are then go for the more expensive keyaki bowls instead Get Shin-kaya bowls for the same price. - Written by flaw on 2007-12-13 11:51:44
![]() I would not suggest Sin-kaya for board but for bowls the softness of the wood does not matter. It is by far the best value for bowls. http://www.samarkand.net/Web_store/web_store.cgi?page=BSBC.html&cart_id=5738575_88537 buy this item now....! - Written by kurzhaar on 2007-05-04 01:03:14
![]() Beautiful, especially for the money - Written by kurzhaar on 2007-05-04 00:59:49
![]() this is my second set. my first bowls were cherry bowls i bought before the internet and the emerging growth of dealers in Go equipment. i think i paid more for my chery bowls fifteen years ago than i did for these. i love these bowls--beautiful finish, grain, and shape.... but them as a set with YMI's yunzi stones and they're an even better value. yunzis are so much nicer than glass stones. so, until you can afford slate and shell from KGT -- this is the best deal going in Go equipment..... A fine set of bowls. - Written by cromonolith on 2007-04-30 08:21:34
![]() I received these as part of a set, and am very happy with them. They're quite aesthetically pleasing, seemingly of a high quality and do their job quite well. As ChiyoDad already stated, they're obviously not up to the standard of some of the finer bowls one can get, but they're definitely worth getting as a first set, or as part of a packaged set. It's worth noting that one of mine had a slight imperfection on its lid, resembling a very small gouge. It appears to be a flaw in the wood rather than the craftsmanship, and YMI was prepared to replace them, but I decided against going through the hassle (I live in Canada) over bowls which will probably be my first of many. Also, I believe these bowls were turned on a lathe, and one of them (the other one) has a bump on top of its lid in the exact centre, presumably where the lathe was holding onto it. Whether these flaws are systemic or unique to mine, I can't say. Nice economical choice - Written by ChiyoDad on 2006-10-12 13:40:51
![]() These are the standard bowls that come with every YMI set. They are, by far, not up to standard of the finer bowls sold by Kuroki Goishi Ten (at about 15,000 Yen or US$130) but they are nice for the price. It's probably most economical to get them in a set (with stones and/or the board) so you get a nice packaged price. Once in a while, they appear in YMI's eBay auctions.
