These basic principles cover virtually every situation and enable a player to find the best play with a minimum of reading. Now, for the first time, he has consented to allow the publication of a book containing a broad selection of these principles, focusing especially on the opening and the early middle game. This is the soft cover edition, the book is also available in hardcover. Comments & ReviewsGreat Book For "this 5k" ***** - Written by mspan
This is my favorite go book. I attened a couple of Yang workshops in the past. I was blown away by his unique teaching style each time. I also took some private lessons from him awhile ago as well. What I like most about this book, and his teaching style in general, is that it resulted in me experiencing a deeper enjoyment of the game. Excellent - Written by Imagist
![]() This is an excellent book. The first few chapters are maybe 6-9k, and the later few are around 3-5k. The material can be a little dense sometimes, but there’s a lot of information and if you read it carefully you will get stronger. excellent for Kyu players - Written by funkyj
![]() Yang is a very good teacher and this book does an excellent job of explaining the fundamentals of opening theory. Learn how to think instead of imitate - Written by gowan
![]() A lot of players learn shapes and patterns from professional games or books but don’t know what to do if the game doesn’t fit a familiar pattern. This book teaches how to think about go so you can deal with unfamiliar situations confidently. Added 12/13/06: I think this book could be valuable even for dan players. I’ve seen many dan-level games on KGS in which players made mistakes that they wouldn’t have made if they knew what’s in this book. Good if you like Yang-style teaching - Written by Shaydwyrm
![]() Mr. Yang has a somewhat unique approach to teaching go to westerners, and the essence of that approach is contained in this book. I came upon this book rather late (1k AGA), and as a result I didn’t learn too much new material from it. While having a new perspective on material I had already learned was refreshing, it was not essential, and I don’t think it helped me to improve much. However, Mr. Yang’s approach is very intuitive and appealing, and weaker players may benefit considerably from checking it out.
