KGT Snow-Grade Stones (雪印, from Mexican Clam),Snow-grade (Yuki, 雪印) stones crafted in Hyuga Japan from Mexican clams. Available in various sizes. Comments & ReviewsHigh quality stones - Written by RedBeard
![]() The snow grade shell stones have very fine lines across the top and practically glow when on the board. Some people have said that they preferred the moon grade stones since the shell grain on them is more pronounced, but I don’t know if the moon grade would have the same luminescent quality as the snow grade. The slate stones that came with the set are so black they seem to absorb the light, making them a striking contrast to the shell. Some owners of slate stones have polished them with wax so that they shine, but I prefer the look of the flat black slate. I’m not planning on shining my slate stones, just oiling them if necessary. The 9.2mm stones are almost round in appearance and tend to wiggle a bit on the board when stones are placed. If this sounds annoying to you, you may want to get a smaller size stone. ![]() Well, I’m sorry to say it, but I was distinctly unimpressed by these stones. I had a chance to play with them at a tournament recently, and though they are beautiful and appealing to hold, I felt that they lacked the character or majesty that older shell stones posess. I have a set of thin (5-6mm) antique stones that I scored on ebay a while back, and I’d been planning to spent the money to get a set of thicker stones from KGT, but after holding them, I really didn’t find them so different from glass or ceramic stones of similar thickness. The sound of them hitting the board was nicer, and the grain is quite apparent, but for whatever reason, they didn’t impress… I have my sights set on some older stones, maybe made from real Japanese shell. I haven’t seen enough to know where these stones rank against other contemporary stones, but they weren’t worth $200 or so to me. These stones are fantastic! - Written by funkyj
![]() I bought 9.2mm (size 33) snow grade stones from KGT and they are great! I had stones from Samarkand (flower grade?) before and the KGT snow grade are much nicer! While communicating with KGT in english via email is a little challenging it is well worth the effort.
