KGT Hyuga Kaya Table Board,Kuroki Goishi Ten’s Hyuga Kaya (Torreya Nucifera) table board. Comments & Reviewsvery pretty - Written by appleseeds
![]() My board recently arrived by ship and it’s just beautiful! It is KGT’s standard grade board, but I can’t imagine why someone would need to spend extra for the pricier grades. This board is made of four pieces and has a beautiful color – sort of an orange-yellow – with clean but varied grain lines. In some pictures the grain lines appear to be very strong, and I was afraid it might be a little distracting, but it’s not. Redbeard’s description of other qualities is spot-on for my board as well. Two things that surprised me a little bit were the weight and the smell. The board is a little heavier than I expected, but that’s not a problem. The smell of the board is hard to describe. I expected something like a cedar, but it’s completely different. It’s pleasant, but not not like a wood-shop type of smell. Anyway, it’s not very strong, just fragrant enough to notice when playing with the board. (Edit: I’ve had the board almost two weeks now and have really come to like its fragrance; it’s sort of addicting.) This is a great board. I’m very pleased. 5 star - Written by kirkmc
![]() I got a wonderful hyuga kaya 6 cm board from KGT, and it’s beautiful. While the set said it was a 7-piece board, mine is only 4 pieces, and the joints are all hidden by lines on the board. It is thick, hefty, has a nice sound when placing stones, and is a wonderful color. Unbelievable - Written by Alan56
![]() I received my new board yesterday, 24 Sept 07. There are no signs of damage anywhere, I’m glad to say – just a smoothly polished finish throughout. The board is made up of five pieces, and although the joins are clear to see on the sides, they are all but undetectable on the playing surface. Top marks to Mr K and his craftsmen! What can you say... - Written by RedBeard
![]() This board is absolutely gorgeous and well worth the price, if you can afford it. The wood for the board is very clear and does not appear to be stained, just polished smooth with a light wax finish. The seams that join the pieces of wood making up the board are matched to the wood grain so that they are barely noticeable. The grid lines of the board are very straight but slightly raised from the surface, possibly due to being applied by hand. I found this surprising and I’m curious to see how the lines will wear with use. The sound of the stones hitting the board is a deep “chock” sound. There are some slight marks on the corner edges of my board which may have been left during the manufacturing process, but they are barely noticeable. It tells me that I can use this board and not feel bad if it doesn’t stay in pristine condition. I don’t think that a Go board of this quality is necessary to play the game, in fact it is an unnecessary luxury. That being said, I wouldn’t trade it for the world and hope to be using it for many many years to come.
