YMI Jitsuyo-grade Slate & Shell Stones (Ogawa Goishi),
Shell and slate stones have few peer among Go stones; they are the ultimate in craftsmanship and beauty, coveted by Go players around the world.
These stones are made in Hyuga City, Japan, producers of the best shell and slate stones in the world since the mid nineteenth century. White stones are made from clam shells harvested in Baja California, Mexico, due to their scarcity from overfishing in Japan. The black stones are made from black slate quarried locally in Japan.
Shaping fine shell and slate stones is a complex and rigorous art form. Stones are shaped to extraordinarily rigid specifications so that their balance and symmetry on the Go board is just right. If a stone’s curves are too long and flat, or it balances incorrectly, or if the size is off by a tiny amount it will be discarded.
These stones are superior jitsuyo ‘standard’ grade, meaning that its grain is slightly broader and thicker than more expensive yuki snow grade stones.
- 180 white clam shell jitsuyo standard grade bi-convex Go stones.
- 181 black Japanese slate bi-convex Go stones.
