Hitome No Tesuji, Book 1 in the MYCOM Igo Series

This book contains 167 problems divided into 4 sections.  Each section begins with a few pages of diagrams explaining some basic concepts which are somewhat related to the problems in the section.  The problems themselves are shown one per page, with the solutions on the back of the page.  All of the problems are black to play.  Sometimes more specific instructions are given under the problem, but the goal is usually easy to figure out even if you can’t read the instructions.  The solutions consist of two diagrams.  The first always shows the correct answer.  The second either further explains the correct answer or shows why some other answer is wrong.

This is a nice little problem book. I recommend it for anyone who thinks it would be fun to have a problem book from Japan, but isn’t quite ready for some of the harder problem books out there.

Most of the problems in the book are at least slightly harder than the crane’s nest on the cover, although there are at least 4 very similar problems in the book. At around 7 kyu KGS, I can solve most of the problems pretty quickly. (Most problems take me somewhere between 30 sec. and 5 min.) It fits easily into my purse, so I can take it with me and pull it out when I have a few minutes to kill.
