Old Yunzi Single Convex Go Stones and Straw Bowls,Description from YMI Imports:
When Yunzi stones went into production in Yunnan Province, China in the 1970’s after an absence of over 50 years, the original Yunzi recipe was painstakingly re-created from old samples, secret recipes, and legend. Now, in the modern process of making Yunzi stones it’s possible to make white stones that are pure white (see our other listings for these stones), whereas the old style of Yunzi stones had a slightly yellowish hue. This set of stones uses the old, unrefined formula, reproduced for purists. In fact, the Chinese Go Academy still considers these stones to be the standard. These stones are "single convex." One side is flat with a slight rounding on the edge, the other is fully rounded. Whether to play with single convex or double convex is a matter of personal taste. In general, Chinese Go players prefer these single convex stones for their feel and louder solid “snap” when played on the board. Included with this set is a pair of bowls woven from straw reeds. The bowls are durable and light, and the tops can be used to collect dead stones from your opponent during a game.

![]() It doesn’t show in the picture, but the white stones are off-white to yellowish, and so go better with a darker-toned Go board. (This is intentional, due the use of a traditional fomula.) The black stones have a nice jade hue when held up to the light. I got the medium sized ones (ask for #3 for Japanese board size) and they fit well on my Japanese-sized board. I am very happy with the YMI service, as they sent me extra stones to replace ones broken in shipping at no extra charge.
