Appreciating Famous Games, Shuzo Ohira, 9 danIn the first book of its kind in English, a leading modern expert analyses ten of the most famous games from Japanese Go history of the 17th to 19th century. The book begins with the lifetime masterpiece of the 4th Honinbo Dosaku and concludes with games by the 19th century geniuses Shuwa and Shusaku, whose skill reached a level of perfection unsurpassed in Go history. Ohira’s commentary on the games does full justice to their brilliance and profundity, yet makes them accessible to players of all levels. Comments & Reviewsvery nice - Written by Javaness
![]() Each game is introduced with a succint historical overview. The games are heavily commented, so much so, that you can almost go through the book without a board. As they are using old style joseki and openings you also get some discourse on the difference between new and old styles, which is instructive. ![]() This is a book of kyu level commentary of interesting historical games. The big benefit of this book is the history given of each of the famous games. The kyu level commentary in combination with the high class historical games (some with handicap, some without) was a direct help for me to get to AGA 3-kyu. Perhaps of even more benefit are the game diagrams, which are limited to about 25 moves per figure. Learning to visualize these smaller diagrams is a big help with reading skills.
